Tips For Chronic Illness Sufferers

September 3, 2015 in Health & Beauty, Personal

Recently I watched a video about self-care for chronic illness sufferers. It had some great tips, but to be honest most of the suggestions were not things that I, personally, could manage.

Chronic illness comes in many forms. For me, I find myself either in bed or (thanks to my awesome stairlift) downstairs on the couch each day. It’s been like that for the past six years, so as you can imagine we have found a few ways to make life easier. I thought I’d share some of these wee tips today. There’s a mixture in here, but perhaps you’ll find something that you hadn’t thought of. Likewise, I’d love to hear any tips you might have.

Starting with personal care. Here are a few products that I like to keep close to hand.

  • An electric toothbrush really helps to minimise the energy needed for teeth brushing.
  • Dry shampoo – this stuff is amazing! When your hair is greasy, but there’s no way you can manage to wash it, dry shampoo is the answer! It leaves your hair looking cleaner and feeling fresher. I love the scent of this one too.
  • Anti-bacterial gel – I have a few of these on the go. I always keep one to hand. A quick way to clean your hands without having to get out of bed.
  • Baby wipes (not pictured) – these are so good for a freshen up.
  • Feminine hygiene wipes – speak for themselves really!
  • Lip balm – the last thing you need is chapped lips on top of everything else.
  • Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – rehydrates your skin with absolute minimal effort.

heat mat

  •  A heat pad – if you find that heat helps to ease your pain, then I definitely recommend one of these. It’s like a mini electric blanket.

  • Kinesiotape – I used to wear wrist splints a lot, but in restricting the movement so much they can actually make things worse. So these days I use kinesiotape and it’s fantastic. It gives you support while still allowing freedom of movement. This was suggested to me by a medical professional, who showed us how to use it, but I’m sure you can find a video online teaching you the basics. Tip – be careful when peeling it off… don’t rip it off quick like a plaster as it will take away some skin! Delightful!

  • Nakd bars – I keep a supply of these to hand. A quick, healthy snack. My favourites are the Cashew Cookie, Gingerbread and Cocoa Orange.
  • Travel mug flask – this isn’t going to be suitable for everyone as it’s fairly large and heavy. It’s not something I can use much these days.  However, if you can manage it, it’s great for keeping your coffee warm and minimising the risk of spillage.
  • Water bottle (not pictured) – we’ve got to stay hydrated so a water bottle is a great solution. You can keep it in bed with you and it won’t spill. Choose a size that you can manage, with a lid you can operate, and consider using a straw.

coffee machine

  • Coffee / hot drinks machine – an easy, minimal effort way to make a hot drink. Get someone else to keep the water level topped up for you. As long as you can lift the mug, then you’re good!

  • A bedside touchlamp – so easy to use, no struggling with switches and it can be dimmed to suit your eyes.

  • An ereader or Kindle is a great addition to your life if you can manage to read. Prop it up against a pillow and you just have to click a button to turn the page!

book pillow

  • Book pillow – if you prefer a physical book then getting set up with a book pillow makes life easier. I struggle to hold even a small paperback so this set-up is great.

  • A smartphone – a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. I also love it for Twitter, it really helps me to feel less isolated and alone.
  • Audible – if you can’t read, but you love stories then I recommend audio books. Audible have daily deals going so you don’t have to sign up for a subscription, you can just purchase books that take your fancy. See my Audible Daily Deals post for more details.

Two final suggestions…

  • A window bird feeder is such a great way to feel connected with the outdoors when you’re stuck in bed.
  • Strategic seating – our house is full of seats so that there’s always one close by. My favourite though is the armchair in the kitchen. It means that I can curl up in there while hubby is cooking.

I think that’s all my suggestions for today! I tried to stick to items that are worth the price you pay for them. I hope you’ve found this post useful.

Do you have any tips to add to the list?

I’d really love to hear any suggestions from you guys. We are always on the lookout for ways to make life easier, more manageable and more enjoyable.

My First Memebox

August 26, 2014 in Health & Beauty, Make Up, Services, What We're Loving

Let me firstly say, I know people have been reviewing these a lot lately, however I purchased this Memebox myself…and have another making its way from Korea as I type. All opinions are completely my own and I just wanted to share this with you.

Ok, now that’s out the way…. welcome to our August edition of What We’re Loving! This month I (Rhoda) am absolutely loving Memebox! Memebox is a Korean beauty box service. It’s not a subscription service as such, they release new boxes frequently and you pop over to their website to order whatever you like the look of.

I was first introduced to Memebox a wee while ago by Coffee Break With Dani (over on YouTube) who does Memebox unboxings. From the first time I saw her unboxing I wanted to get my hands on one of these boxes, but I wasn’t sure how it would work being shipped over here. I really didn’t want to be slapped with a big customs charge when it arrived. So I patiently held off until I found some other UK bloggers who had ordered Memeboxes with no problems and so I plunged in with my first order.

Having seen various reviews online I decided to opt for the Hair & Body 2 box. The box itself cost $23 (£13.88) and standard shipping is $6.99 (£4.22) although this box had free upgrade to express delivery, and wow was it quick!!!

I used a combination of Meme Points & a coupon code to bring the total price in at $14.99 (£9.04). A MASSIVE bargain! In fact it’s a massive bargain at the standard price, but it’s worth a wee look about for any coupon codes prior to ordering.

I also nabbed one of their secret deals so I was sent a free 45ml DrG Brighening Balm in Super Light which actually retails on the site for $25! Seriously, I cannot believe how much stuff I got for £9!

Ok, I’ll stop rambling. Here’s what came in the box….

inside box

…jam packed full of goodies!! You also get a wee card that tells you what everything is, how to use it and how much it retails for. Don’t lose the card as in some cases it’s the only English instructions.

Kocostar Foot Therapy 40ml ($9) Ok I confess it was this item that really made me choose this box. These are basically a wee pair of socks you put on for about 1.5hours. They have gel inside & feel really tingly on the feet. Rinse off the gel and about 4 days later you’ll notice the skin coming off, yeup coming off, your feet! It should be disgusting, but it’s pretty awesome. My feet are unbelievably soft now and I seriously love this foot wrap! I’d just advise you not to do it if you’re going to be sandals in about 4 days time, not a good look!

Evas Cosmetics Body Net 7Days Project 200ml ($6) Sticking with the body, I’ve been using this shower gel for a while. There were 7 different scents available and I got the Deep Sea Water. It’s nice.

Label Young Shocking Holjjuki 100ml ($21) This stuff scares me. It’s a one-step body slimming cream. You apply it where you want a slimming effect and it, well, slims it. It heats up though so you need to be careful not to use too much. Honestly, I’ve used this once and I was too scared to put much on, so I can’t give you an opinion on this. I need to be brave and give it another go.

Vidanail Lvida Lavender Oil 10ml ($10) I really like this lavender oil. It helps the nails, is easy to apply and looks so cute. Look at the bits of lavender in it!!! >>

Moving on…

Hello Everybody Spa Vita Berry Shampoo & Treatment 30ml (Full sized product: 220ml ($38)) I LOVE the smell of these! I was going to save them for trips away but the smell was too good, I had to try them. I’ve been using these once a week/10 days to help give my hair a vitamin boost. I don’t think my hair could handle more than that so these should last a wee while.

Boutique Bebe Hair Salon Argan Oil Essence 60ml ($31) Apart from the bizarrely brilliant foot wraps this is my favourite item in the box. I just apply a little with my fingers and it gives my hair a nice, natural looking shine. It was great on the ends of my hair just before I got it cut, really helped my hair look and feel more presentable!

So that’s the contents of my Hair & Body 2 Box, worth $77, or $81 factoring in the sample sized hair goodies!

I mentioned that I bagged one of their secret deals. This meant I was sent this DrG BB cream for free..

So all-in-all by applying my memepoints and a discount code, I received $106 (£63.93) worth of products for just $14.99 (£9.04)!!

I’m delighted with this box. I didn’t incur any customs charges which was great. I believe that’s because it cost less than £15? Anyway, I love this box so much that I’ve already ordered my next one. I’m even more excited about it as it’s the Collab With Coffee Break With Dani box!

One final tip… if you see a box you fancy and it’s in stock GO FOR IT! They sell out really, really quickly.

Have you tried Memebox? What’s your favourite product so far?

As mentioned above, I bought this Memebox myself and just wanted to share it with you! All opinions expressed are my own and completely honest. As always there are no affiliate links in this post

Tanya Burr Nail Polishes

August 15, 2014 in Health & Beauty, Make Up

I love nail polish. There, I said it. So when I was asked if I wanted to try some of the polishes from Tanya Burr’s new colour range with eye CANDY obviously I said YES!

If you aren’t familiar with Tanya Burr, she shot to fame through her Beauty, Fashion & Lifestyle blog and her YouTube channel. She’s a “beauty guru” and creates makeup looks & tutorials that even I have a hope of achieving! Working closely with eye CANDY, she has released her own range of nail polishes and lip glosses….and I was lucky enough to be sent 3 to try!

Left to right in photos below – Peaches & CreamPenguin Chic and Mini Marshmallows.

First things first, the packaging…

tanya burr polishes 3

I love the Tanya Burr signature logo on the bottle and the heart on the lid. Aside from the cuteness it makes them easy to spot in my nail polish collection!

However the hearts are just stickers on the lid and do look a bit grubby now. Also, the square lid comes off a couple of the polishes really easily, leaving you to tackle the circular lid underneath. Hardly the end of the world, just something to note.

Obviously it’s what’s inside the bottle that’s most important so I’ve tried & tested all three polishes over the past few weeks.

The colours of all three polishes are gorgeous. The swatches above show two coats on each nail. In practice though I had to put three coats of the Mini Marshmallows (right) on my nails to ensure it was opaque.

The formula is good. It’s easy to apply and dries quite quickly between coats which is great. I hate sitting about waiting for a coat to dry, don’t you?

As for the wear….well I wore my usual top coat with all of these polishes and I started to get chipping after about 4 days. For me, this is a fairly average wear length. I’ve spoken to my sister though and these polishes last a lot longer on her nails so I guess it’s just a personal thing.

These nail polishes retail for £5.99 on the Superdrug website. It’s worth noting though that Feel Unique have some of the shades (including Penguin Chic) for £4.99 so it’s definitely worth check both websites before ordering.

My final thoughts? I liked these polishes, with Penguin Chic being my favourite. The shades are gorgeous and they are easy to apply. However, for me, they didn’t last as long as some other polishes of a similar price, or less. That said, the 10 colours in the collection are lovely and I do have my eye on some of the other shades… Little Duck looks gorgeous! So the wear length wouldn’t put me off buying other shades in the future, but I would probably hold out for a 3 for 2 deal or similar.

Have you tried the Tanya Burr polishes yet? What’s your favourite shade?

We were sent 3 polishes for consideration. As always all opinions expressed are entirely our own and completely honest. As always there are no affiliate links in this post.

Quick and Easy Summer Daytime Look!

July 13, 2014 in Beauty, Health & Beauty, Kirsty Beauty, Make Up

It’s a sunny(ish) day and you want to go out in your new sundress and look positively radiant.  For some people this is easy- shower, natural hair, no makeup – DONE! For others (i.e moi (Kirsty)) this is not so simple plus some of us (i.e me again) just love makeup!  In these summer months, I like to play around with makeup and colours but here is a quick run-through of my basic summer go-to daytime look.  Say hello to lots of natural, creamy consistencies and bye-bye to cakey powders.  I didn’t plan this but it just so happens that most of the products I’ve chosen are from the drugstore so it’s also a cheap look.  Plus I apply the majority with my fingers so it’s quick and easy to apply and you get more time in the sunshine- Bonus!

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream/Wake Me Up foundation by Rimmel – This choice always depends on how my skin is.  The BB cream is a lot less coverage but I think Maybelline have come up trumps with this one.  It’s really just like a tinted moisturiser.  It evens out my skin-tone without it looking like I’m wearing much and it has SPF 30! For days when more coverage is ESSENTIAL, I go with Wake Me Up as it is still light and gives a lovely glow to the skin.  I apply both with my fingers for an even and natural finish.

Soap and Glory Kick-Ass Concealer  – No matter how clear my skin is, I always need a good concealer due to my looovely skintone (a lovely rainbow of reds and blues and all sorts).  This little pot is truly incredible! It’s creamy at the same time as being heavy duty enough for me.  It is a ‘three-piece camouflage set’ which contains 1. a pinky/peachy undereye concealer/corrector to cover the blue bags (Yay!) 2. a yellowy toned, thicker concealer to cover up spots and redness (Boom!) and 3. A transparent powder to fix it all in place (sorted).  The powder not only sets but isn’t too matte.  I can’t recommend this product highly enough!

Stila Convertible Colour Blush – I love this blush as previously mentioned in my March Favourites.  I just like a cream blush for daytime in the summer as it’s a lot more natural and this one is perfect in both shade and consistency.

Elf Eyebrow Kit – Another staple in my makeup bag that was mentioned in my March Favourites.  The waxy colour topped with the powder leads to natural brows which stay put all day.

Topshop Glow Stick in Play Up –   I’ve had this highlighter for a couple of months and I’ve fallen in love.  As Topshop say “blend the product onto the skin for an effortless glow”. It’s a dream!

 swatches 2

Maybelline Colour Tattoo in On and On Bronze/Mac Paint Pot in Painterly –  I mix these up depending on what look I’m wanting;  Shimmer = Maybelline   Matte = Mac.  These are quick to use and easy to blend minus a brush.   They also last all day long!

Elf Contouring Blush and Bronzing Powder – I use this mainly for the bronzer for this look but the blush is a gorgeous peachy, coral pink which I enjoy wearing too.  This is the only real powder based product I use (apart from the Soap and Glory powder) but you could replace this for a cream/gel bronzer like Chanel or Bourjois.  This is my favourite bronzer right now – it is cheap and has a little shimmer but not too much.  It’s comparable to Nars Laguna I’d say.  It’s really well pigmented but be warned, give the brush a good whack before applying it – a little goes a long way!

summer look

Additional products –

Any mascara you like.  Mine is Maybelline The Falsies.

Some form of liner – I go for Maybelline Gel Liner or Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal as they last all day long.

Something to set it if you fancy – I use Elf Mist and Set Setting spray.  Cheap and cheerful, helps to keep things in place at the same time as adding a bit of dewiness.

Quick, cheap, natural, summery makeup – DONE!
