Homemade iPhone Case

February 27, 2014 in Competition, Crafts, Homemade Thursday, Thrifty

First things first, until October I hadn’t touched a sewing machine since I was 12. That was in school where we all made cushions. I couldn’t begin to tell you the first thing about a sewing machine or how to use it, but I’ve been (slowly) teaching myself.

Last month I got a new phone (the iPhone 5C which I totally love). I was looking online at pouches and covers but everything was so expensive! So I went through my Pinterest boards and found a tutorial for an iPhone pouch…and made it!

It’s really not perfect at all, the off centre button does annoy me a bit, but I really love it…and I MADE IT!

If you fancy having a go at this yourself I got the tutorial over on the During Quiet Time blog. There is a pdf copy of the tutorial and the pattern available here. If I can do it, so can you! :-)

While I’m here talking about sewing I thought I’d share a fab comp with you. Hillarys Blinds have a competition running for creative bloggers. Basically you sign up and chose one of their four Country Retreat fabrics. They will then send you out a 100cm x 100cm piece for you to use to create your own craft. You then have to blog about it and send the link over to them. All posts will be judged and the winner will win £1000!!! Definitely worth a shot. As far as I can see you have until Monday 17th March to request your fabric sample, and until 31st March 2014 to get your blog post published. I’d love to know if you give it a go so I can go and peek at your blogging entries. Good luck!

I’m linking up today’s post with Homemade Thursday over on White Lily Green. Why not pop over and see what other homemade treats bloggers have been up to this week.

A Thrifty Valentine’s Gift?

February 11, 2014 in Food and Drink, Gifts, Recipes, Thrifty

Everyone has their own thoughts on Valentine’s Day. I might be classed as a Valentine’s Scrooge in that I’m not one for spending much money on the Day. Thankfully hubby and I are of the same mind when it comes to this. He knows I’d be unimpressed if he turned up with a bunch of overpriced roses! Personally I feel you should show the person you love how much you love them every day, not just one day a year. However in the event that you do want to use 14th February to declare your love, keep in mind that you don’t have to spend a fortune.

This year we have created a couple of homemade, easy-to-make Valentine’s edible gifts that won’t break the bank!

ASDA

Asda currently have heart shaped cookie cutters for just £1 as well as heart shaped ice cube trays for £2. They sent us some to try (along with some bubbles!) Using either or both of these products you could make some homemade Valentine’s treats that will mean more than a box of shop bought chocolates….plus you can use the cutters and tray every year!

choc hearts

We used the heart shaped ice cube trays to make our own chocolates. We simply melted dark chocolate and poured a little into the tray, then we added some fine slices of strawberry and topped it off with more chocolate. After an hour or so in the fridge they set and were really easy to pop out of the ice cube tray! If you’re on Pinterest then you will see some fantastic ice cube tray treat ideas….it’s worth a look.

sables

The cookie cutters were set to use when we created some jam filled Sablés. After finding this recipe on the BBC website we used two of the four different sized heart shaped cutters to create the biscuits. We had everything we needed for the Sablés in the store cupboard so these really were a cheap bake. At £1, the cookie cutters are a great bargain in my opinion.

So there you have it. Two easy ways to say “I love you” to that special someone. We’re confident that they’ll be a hit and they will mean more to the recipient since you actually took the time and energy to make them.

Incidentally, don’t feel like you have to give these goodies away, a chef should always taste their bakes!

We were sent samples from Asda for our consideration. All opinions expressed are entirely our own and completely honest.
