Buy British Day: Some Of Our Favourites

October 3, 2015 in Food and Drink, Gifts, Gluten Free

Today (the 3rd of October) is the second annual Buy British Day. So I thought I’d share some of the British products our family loves!

First things first, Tobermory Chocolates. Full disclosure, as always, let me say that this company is owned by my friend’s family. Regardless of this fact, I love their chocolates!! Handmade, luxurious and such a treat! If you’re ever in Tobermory they have a lovely shop and cafe.

When it comes to chocolate brownies, Gower Cottage Brownies cannot be beaten in my opinion. Plus she does gluten free ones too!!

Moving onto alcohol…

Mum is a fan of The Botanist Islay Dry Gin

Husband loves the beers by Williams Brothers

My favourite cider EVER is by Gwynt Y Ddraig

Ok, I need to stop with the food and drink!

One of my favourite stationery companies is Dots and Spots – Becky has such a beautiful range and I like to stock up on her cards & wrap so that I’ve always got some in the house.

When it comes to candles, the Isle of Skye Candle Company is a popular choice in our family. Personally, I love the Vanilla & Fig.

I could go on… and on… but that’s just a selection of our favourite British products.

I’d love to hear what your favourite British products are?

Also, for today only Make It British has a HUGE Buy British giveaway running – be sure to check it out!

As always, there are no affiliate links or anything like that in this post.

Bonjour French Food Review

July 10, 2014 in Food and Drink, Gifts, Services

Back in April we posted a round-up of subscription boxes, if you missed it you can find it here. Our pick of the food subscription boxes on offer was Bonjour French Food, a subscription service who specialise in delivering Gourmet French products to your door. The lovely folk at Bonjour French Food sent us a box last month so that we could try out their service for ourselves. We were very impressed!

Bonjour French Food

I (Rhoda) have to admit I was really excited when the box arrived. I couldn’t wait to see what was in it, to be transported by taste back to my childhood holidays in France.

opening the box

Upon opening the box I found a wee sheet with information on all the products, as well as suggestions on how to get the most out of your taste experience. There is usually a magazine in the box with this information but there was a mishap with the printing service. Absolutely no problem for me, the sheet tells you everything you need to know!

sneak peek

Digging under the packaging (everything was well packaged and arrived in one piece) I got my first peek of the contents, two madeleines peeking back at me put a smile on my face!

the contents

It took great restraint to take these photos before unwrapping the tissue paper!

Everything in the box looked absolutely amazing, a fantastic combination. The June selection was chosen with an outdoor lunch in mind, and I think they nailed it! So what was in the box? Well here’s an English translation..

Artichoke Cream with Black Truffle

Red Pepper Cream

Countryside Terrine

Duck Terrine with Cep Mushroom & Ginger

Apple & Caramel Compote

Almond & Elderflower Navettes

I decided that this selection was far too exciting just to keep to myself so we took the products when we went to stay with the in-laws and everyone loved getting in on the tasting!

terrine tasting

Everyone had their own favourites; personally I loved the terrines. I was slightly nervous before opening the tin as I’m not a fan of really chunky terrines. However although I wouldn’t describe this terrine as smooth, it absolutely melted in the mouth. You really could taste the quality. As I’d hoped, the taste transported me back to my youth, sitting on a picnic rug just off a country lane in Normandy with my family, armed with a baguette and terrine.

We were all really impressed with this box. It was such a lovely treat and would make a fantastic gift for the foodie or Francophile in your life. Or you could of course treat yourself to a monthly gourmet trip to France from the comfort of your own home.

The box we received was the Monthly Surprise Box which costs £29/month including P&P. Or you can try a one-off for £32. As well as the Monthly Surprise Box, Bonjour French Food have introduced two other boxes that you can purchase at any time, the Charcuterie Hamper (£27) and the Veggie Hamper (£29).

Overall, I really love this concept. Bonjour French Food really captured and delivered a taste of France to my door. The products were all luxurious and of a very high quality. I will definitely be keeping this company in mind for gifts, it’s something really different and a real treat.

For more information on Bonjour French Food visit their website.

Thank you to Bonjour French Food for sending us a complimentary Monthly Surprise Box for our consideration. All opinions expressed are entirely our own and, as always, completely honest.

Favourite YouTubers – Nerdy Nummies

June 11, 2014 in Favourite YouTubers, Food and Drink

Hubby’s 30th birthday is fast approaching, so it’s come around to that time of year when I start thinking about birthday cakes!

Truth be told hubby would be happy with anything as long as it’s chocolate, but every year I’ve tried to make a themed cake. In the past we’ve had Game of Thrones, hockey and football. I don’t think I’m going to be physically able to do one this year though. Last year Mum helped me A LOT. So yeah, I think this year will be a shop or bakery bought cake, but that hasn’t stopped me from browsing the internet for cake ideas!

In the past I’ve tweeted about my favourite cake-related youtube channel but I’m not sure that I’ve ever blogged about it. If you are looking for simple yet amazing cake ideas Nerdy Nummies is the place to go!

Nerdy Nummies is a self proclaimed Geeky Cooking Show hosted by the bubbly and beautiful Rosanna Pansino. As a kid I used to love Blue Peter type shows where they showed you how to bake or create something (do they still do that kind of thing?). Nerdy Nummies is like a much, much better version of that!

Rosanna comes up with a way to create a themed cake or biscuit or general nummy and shares it on her channel. She’s so creative and explains things really well. I like to just watch her create her masterpieces although I have no intention of making the item! Haha. I love to see how she does it!

So I thought I’d share a few of my favourites with you, to inspire you and to give you an idea of the amazing Nerdy Nummies she creates.

Game of Thrones Cake

Pi Pie Pops

Frozen Princess Cake

Science Beaker Cake

Okay I think I better stop before this post ends up with her entire channel on it!

Her cakes are amazing aren’t they? Last year Mum and I made her dragon eggs. It was so easy and so much fun. She is always open to viewer requests too!

For more Nerdy Nummies check out Rosanna’s channel. You can also find her on Instagram and Twitter.

I’d love to know if you’ve ever made any of her Nummies…or if you plan to give one a go!

We just wanted to share this awesome channel with you!

What We’re Loving… Father’s Day Edition

May 30, 2014 in Garden, Gifts, Gluten Free, What We're Loving

With Father’s Day fast approaching, this month’s what we’re loving is full of ideas for your Daddy! My Dad is particularly hard to buy for. All he really wants is a quadbike and really that’s a bit outwith my budget! So here are a few more realistic Father’s Day gift ideas.

What We're Loving Badge

One of my top go-to gifts is Gower Cottage Brownies. They are absolutely AMAZING and they do gluten free too! Perfect for Dad’s with a sweet tooth (like mine).

My Dad has an obsession with mechanical pencils. Every day in the summer he takes the newspaper out to the garden with a beverage and a mechanical pencil and does the crossword.

Gin is Dad’s summer drink. This Caorunn gin with its Gaelic name (he’s a native speaker) is bound to go down well.

Dad loves his vegetable garden. He’s also a great chef. So this Limited Edition Kitchen Garden Box would make a great gift.

Finally, Dad loves a cup of tea. He’s also got a great sense of humour (he’s still a wee boy at heart) so he’d definitely love this Creature Cup.

We’d love to hear your Father’s Day gift ideas. Feel free to save them in the comments below.

This is our own round up of Father’s Day gifts. We have not been asked to feature any of these companies. As always, there are no affiliate links here.

prudence and the crow

Prudence and the Crow is a vintage book subscription box. Like the others we have mentioned so far you can order this as a “one-off” or a monthly subscription. Basically you fill in a short questionnaire then Prudence and the Crow will hand pick a vintage (pre-2000) book to send you in the post! They currently offer four genres; Youth Fiction, Science Fiction, Classic Thriller and Children’s. However they can cater for most tastes. Your Prudence and the Crow box will come complete with a surprise preloved book, a handmade book bag to store it in as well as a couple of other wee surprises. We think this would make a great gift for the book lover in your life that seems to have read everything!

Prices start at £10/month. Prudence and the Crow will shop internationally from £14/month.

willoughby book club

The Willoughby Book Club is, similarly, a subscription whereby you receive a book in the post. However they deal in new books. They have 10 different subscription book clubs on offer, ranging from baby books to cookery books and natural history books to contemporary reads. Again, each book is hand chosen for the recipient based upon information you fill in online.

Subscriptions are available for 3,6 or 12 months, with prices starting at £29.99. They will also ship internationally for a fee, see website for details.

We couldn’t include books and not give stationery a mention!

ink drops

Ink Drops is a stationery subscription box. Their ACE box offers you the chance to receive a surprise package of stationery every month (although you can sneak a peek online if you are impatient). There’s no minimum subscription length so you could get a “one-off” box if you remember to cancel your membership. You can also send this as a gift. Ink Drops have a range of other boxes that are available for immediate dispatch.

The ACE box subscription costs a total of £15.45 a month. International delivery is also available from £16.45/month.

Look out for an Ink Drops giveaway coming up on the blog during May!

Our final subscription box is a pregnancy box. Our very own Liz is expecting her third child in October so we thought we’d include a box that is especially for pregnant ladies.

project B

Project B is a subscription box specifically designed for pregnant ladies. There are 7 boxes available starting from month 4 of your pregnancy, right up to month 10 when baby has appeared. You can start the subscription at any point during your pregnancy, just ask for the relevant box to start you off. Each box has a different theme and will include between 5-10 products (from well known brands) ranging from relaxation to healthy eating and household to pampering. We think Project B would make a great gift for the pregnant lady in your life. It can be cancelled at any time.

A Project B subscription will cost you £14/month.
