Unboxing: Illumicrate Magic and Mayhem Edition

Posted October 3, 2018

I got my first ever special edition Illumicrate last week. Having swooned over previous special editions such as the Grisha and Howler boxes, I was SO pleased to get my hands on Magic & Mayhem: The V.E. Edition.

Designed by Hey Atlas Creative

It’s no secret that V.E. Schwab is one of my all-time favourite authors. With the prospect of ten items inspired by the Shades of Magic series and Villains duology, and a box that has had input from Schwab herself, it was an early birthday present that couldn’t be resisted.

First of all, we received this stunning, signed edition of Schwab’s latest book – the much anticipated sequel to ViciousVengeful (you can find my review here). This edition is exclusive to this Illumicrate box, and I am so delighted to have this edition in my V.E. Schwab collection.

Vengeful Illumicrate

It arrived in this beautiful Villains inspired book sleeve. This is one of my favourite items in the box, it’s just perfect! With quotes from both Vicious and Vengeful in the style of Victor Vale.

This box was FULL of goodies though, so let’s have a look at the other items we received.

I really like this water bottle with gorgeous lettering by Crini.

As Tascan Water Bottle

I’m always delighted to received a tote bag and this one with Shades of Magic-inspired work on one side, and Villains-inspired work on the other is so striking. Designed by Rowa Tree, to me it just screams VE Schwab!

Daphne has included so many talented artists in this box, and this illustration by Victoria Ying of Lila and Kell at the ball during the Essen Tach is a perfect example of the talent on display.

There are also these tarot-style cards featuring work from Lorena Lammer.  They are just gorgeous, I might actually frame them.

As well as tote bags, I adore a good pouch and this one from Stella Bookish Art is a new favourite of mine!

Fable and Black have three exquisite items in this box – an enamel pin, a keyring and a scarf.

My horrendous photography skills cannot do this scarf justice…

but it has all four Londons ready to wrap around your neck.

This ‘As Travars’ keyring is another favourite of mine. The detail in the design is perfect and I can’t wait to add this to my keys. I’m not sure there could be a more perfect keyring for my mobility scooter keys!

Then we have this Villains-inspired enamel pin. Controversially, I’m not hugely into this recent enamel pin craze but this pin might just help to convert me!

Merwild‘s character artwork has been turned into four stunning Shades of Magic bookmarks.

I love bookish candles, they are one of my favourite items to receive in a book box. This layered candle from Amelia’s Kitchen Candles is inspired by the neighbouring Londons. Not only does it look beautiful, but it smells gorgeous too with notes of bergamot, cinnamon and vanilla.

Sticking with the four Londons, Moledro Craft Co has created postcard souvenirs from each of the Londons in the Shades of Magic series. I love the attention to detail in them, and the quotes on the back.

Last but not least, I adore this Saren Noche enamel mug drawn by Temporary Places and it’ll be taking pride of place in my kitchen.

I’m so overwhelmed by the amazingness of this box! Daphne has done an incredible job in putting it together and every single item has a special feel to it. I can’t believe how much she has managed to cram into the box (we couldn’t cram it all into a photo!), and the quality of it all is just what I’ve come to expect from Illumicrate – excellent.

All in all, I couldn’t be more pleased. The addition of a letter from V.E. Schwab rounded this box off perfectly for me.

What do you think of the Magic & Mayhem box?
